I defended my PhD in the Centre for Applied Conservation Research at the University of British Columbia on February 16, 2007. My PhD research examined the consequences of trophic flows between stream and forest ecosystems - work that focused on the landscape level connections between ecological communities. In this research I combined field manipulations, descriptive surveys, laboratory experiments and analytical models to examine the factors that modify the role of ecosystem subsidies in recipient habitats. Overall, connecting community ecology to the perspectives provided by landscape ecology has been the central challenge of my doctoral work.

I do work in a variety of ecosystems. Although I seem to spend much of my time with invertebrates (riparian spiders, waterstriders, aquatic insects), I have also spent considerable time teaching amphibian ecology at an annual Field School (as part of the Conservation Program at UBC) and mucking about with cutthroat trout.

Starting in April 2007 I will be working as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. John Richardson's lab on a Forest Sciences Program (FSP) grant. The grant will fund three years of research into the consequences of shifts in terrestrial litter inputs to the invertebrate communities of small headwater streams and the effects of such community shifts on key ecosystem functions including detrital processing and secondary production.
